Stem Cell/Aging Medicine Q & A

What are stem cells?

Stem cells are the cells in your body that have the ability to transform into specialized cells, such as brain, bone, or muscle cells, to repair tissue. However, your stem cells have limitations and may not have the ability to repair all cellular damage. Researchers are currently studying stem cells to better understand chronic diseases and how these cells may help or cure these diseases.

What is stem cell therapy?

While stem cell research is in the very early stages, many are benefiting from stem cell therapy. With this form of regenerative medicine, doctors are using specially prepared stem cells to help support healing of damaged tissue.

During stem cell therapy, Dr. Neret injects the stem cell preparation into your diseased or damaged tissue and the stem cells transform into the cells needed to repair the damage.

After stem cell therapy you may have some swelling and redness at the site of the injection and may need to modify your activities for a day or two. While results vary, you may start to notice an improvement in pain and function within three to eight weeks after your injection, with continued improvements over the next six months.

What is aging medicine?

Many chronic conditions develop due to the changes that occur in your body as you get older. Aging medicine focuses on providing care that slows down the aging process.

Dr. Neret takes a preventive approach to medicine and focuses on providing his patients with the knowledge and tools they need to slow down the cellular changes of aging, which may include:

  • Diet modification
  • Exercise program
  • Stem cell therapy
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)
  • Nutrition supplementation

He may also suggest hormone replacement options if your levels are low.

Am I a good candidate for stem cells/aging medicine?

Dr. Neret and his team determine if you’re a good candidate for stem cell therapy and/or aging medicine during your evaluation. While stem cell therapy may only be recommended for specific health needs, anyone can benefit from aging medicine. Getting the right medical care and the support you need to make better lifestyle choices can improve the longevity and quality of your life.
